Same-Sex Marriage… Do I agree with President Obama?

May 11, 2012

In the age of “inclusion” we have often found ourselves fearful of offending others not wanting to be labeled as bigots, prejudice or closed-minded. So those who have an opinion are silenced. They are silenced by the activists who are fighting for the underdog or minority even when their points might be valid. I haven’t ever been a person who was afraid to speak my mind as long as it is done respectfully.
The president recently came out with his support of same-sex marriage and created a lot of discussion. Some say his opinion was personal. C’mon though, if Robin Roberts referred to him as Barry, she would be seen as disrespectful. The president does not have the privilege of a personal opinion while addressing the public. His opinions are attached to his public servitude. Anyways, I digressed.

He is the most powerful person in the world. So who would disagree with the “king” of the land? So what we find in many cases is the king reigns while we hope his decisions are upright and of moral good. But what if the king is ill-informed? We hope he has good advisers and a good conscience but what if he doesn’t? I absolutely find President Obama to be a good person, from what I’ve observed, but that doesn’t mean we should arbitrarily agree with him on everything because he has made history, and continues to, for our community.

We will find people who once stood on the other side of his opinion moving over to his side because of the president’s influence. They are silenced by the benefits of being in his graces and being seen as an Obama supporter. If you disagree with someone’s position, it doesn’t mean you being unsupportive. I disagree with my parents at times, but I would still go to war for them.

So what’s my position on this? Sometimes I think we get distracted from the core issue. Where we went wrong is when the government got involved with the marriage institution and made it a universally applicable thing. Marriage was (and should be) a covenant between believers of God. That’s how it was originated right? Let me go further. Atheists and Agnostics are involved with steering the direction of marriage. In many cases, they are even citing “God loves everyone” (which is absolutely true) even when they don’t believe in God. I believe marriage is being hi-jacked by government (for political gain) and non-believers for tangible benefits. Remember, America was built on biblical principles and many of our early laws, rules, charters and constitution reflected such. When government decided to separate church from state, it also needed to understand that marriage needed to be separated from their reigns as well. But of course this didn’t happen because marriage is a money-maker for many counties and cities in the form of marriage licenses.

Government can be knee-jerk and often doesn’t think things out critically, or sometimes they do and just hope the voters won’t. When we don’t we wind up arguing the wrong points in a surface-manner not uprooting the true core as the bureaucrats laugh at our distracted vision. We want to be a people of benefits but not responsibility. If you don’t believe in God, if you want to separate church from state, then lobby for a similar but equal union-type but don’t call it marriage. If you want to call it married, then follow the rules of what marriage and what marriage was originated under. We removed God from the government buildings but allow judges to perform nuptials and divorces.

People, let’s see the root instead of just the leaves. I again, stand in the position that government should’ve never been involved with this issue if they continue to want church to be separate from state. I could care less what same sex couples do, live and what benefits they receive, but if we want to be honest with ourselves, same-sex marriage, in biblical terms (which is the only term there is if we are using the word marriage) is an oxymoron. There can be no such thing. This is like a stranger trying to hi-jack your legacy by legally changing their last name to yours and forcing you to give them the benefits of being in your family. That doesn’t biologically make them your relative nor entitled to the benefits, inheritance, etc. of being in your family.

Some argue that this is a civil rights issue and this requires the government’s involvement but I disagree. When interracial marriage was illegal, we were denying a man and a woman from marrying each other; clearly something the Bible says commensurate a marriage (a man and a woman). Its language doesn’t disqualify people by race but it does disqualify people by gender, the same way it disqualifies a person from marrying an animal. In addition, the civil rights movement was fighting for the Constitution to be enforced, not amended. However, my take on this still lies that the church should be the institution to amend what we have traditionally practiced, not government. Church will be guided by the moral compass that the Bible instructs. If the church decides that same gender is acceptable, my position will follow the church, as I see them as being the professional interpreters of the Bible and responsible for the body of people that follows it.

We must stay focused on the principle of what we are doing and how we can be offensive to others as we are working towards being inclusive of some. Let the churches decide, if you ask me. There is where marriage is shaped. The Bible is what lays out the covenant and the directives to marriage, not government policies or the Constitution. This may sound harsh to same-sex marriage proponents, but it is all about being honest. The government can recognize and grant EQUAL tangible benefits of marriage (tax breaks, citizenship, etc.) to same-sex couples by creating a union with a different name. If we use the word marriage, I believe…we should abide by, respect and honor the manual that sanctioned it…the Bible.

I raised my voice, now raise yours!

I never thought about marriage that way before. Since I have been going to church and the more I think about it this is really true. We should not call it marriage because it goes against the Bible. I agree with this article. Thank-you Mr. Robinson for opening up my eyes and my mind.

Maaaannn….Whatever for the Bible…the bible is mostly fiction. The only part of the bible that has any bearing on how we should live and treat people is Proverbs. And this is just common sense…follow the golden rule..do unto others as you would have them do unto you..simple as that. Stop using the bible as an excuse to treat people badly, impose your own agenda and oppress.

I don’t belive that because he is president that he should not have a personal opnion on the issues at hand am glad that he can take a stand and let us know where he stands on the issue. As far as the government getting involved in the same sex marriage i dont agree..when we sperated church and state that what it should be..i read a quote from some one one that the goverment as a civil rights should grant anyone a marriage certificate and it should be up to the church if they want to perform a marriage..and i agree…to me discrimination is discrimination. the government shuould not be able to put limitations on how far someone should take their love or who they want to spend the rest of their lives with.

Have you ever asked your parents how they felt

They were treated like second class citizens.
That is how you want to treat millions of people who

You emotional idiots always miss the message by wanting to arbitrarily compare race with sexual orientation; something you can choose to display or hide if you wish… race, you can’t! You’re the close-minded one because you refuse to accept someone else’s opinions. I love how people are closed-minded if they choose not to share an opinion with someone else. The Bible specifically speaks about homosexuality. It says nothing about Blacks belonging second-class citizens. You can’t compare the two! Isn’t the Bible used to commensurate a marriage? How can we change the text?

      • May 12, 2012 8:20 am

D.K Lester, are you really trying to compare what our (black) ancestors had to go through with gay rights? What his ancestors had to endure in the fight of racism and equal rights has nothing to do with the fight that gays are fighting for.
I am not a gay basher but the equal rights and struggles of a black person can’t be compared to gay rights. Although the FIGHT for equal rights is the same for gays and black people, the STRUGGLE for equal rights isn’t. To make it simple: If I was gay, when I leave the house, I can hide or not reveal I am gay and not subject myself to gay haters and ignorance of other people because they will not know. A black person leaves the house and can still be subject to hate and racism because they can’t hide the color of their skin. There are other instances I can point out but this is clear enough. If not, nothing more can be said except, we all are who we are and we all have our own opinions and views on different subjects. Not liking someone for who they are is no excuse for disrespect and inequality. But also not liking someone else opinions is also no excuse for disrespect and name calling. To do so Mr. Lester will make you the close-minded and bigot here.

Greetings, If we say same gender, same gender relationships, same gender unions, would we be so offended? I believe the word “sex” makes us visually uncomfortable. We can’t stand the idea of ugh the same sex…..having sex! Same gender softens it a bit and makes it almost acceptable. Way too much emphasis is placed on sex instead of how we treat each other. Why are you mad at who I love and who loves me?

Do we not have many, many other problems and issues going on in the world like war, crooked law enforcement…thieving CEOs, dishonest politicians, stupid men who cheat on their wives and ruin their careers and empires, kids that grow up to be sociopaths because their parents did not take care of them properly? There are SOOOO many more things we could be discussing and ranting and raving about than this. It should not matter who you love or who loves you. No one has ever talked to GOD and asked him how he feels. The Bible? It has been changed and re-written so many times who knows what to believe…never mind that it was written by MAN….This is the most ignorant thing I have ever heard. Please people….focus on things that are important…DAMN!

It amaze me the way the world view things. We’re talking about marriage its only one way to see it and that’s the Bible way- the TRUTH. Yes, plenty will opposed the truth, but the Bible speaks of that. Yes, Obama is entitled to an opinion. We all are, but some times we need to know when to speak and when not to speak. As leader of our country I respect him and pray for him and his family. As I would for anyone in his position. Just because he’s leader we don’t have to agree with everything he says. So you’re right that leader could be your parent, boss, teacher, husband or whoever doesn’t mean you have to agree with everything they say or do. I understand your view & very good point that marriage is being hijack for tangible benefits. The way it seems who could really argue that. However, we all have to stand for something. Same-sex marriage(not afraid of the word-sex, sex) same-sex marriage NOT!

  13. May 12, 2012 8:57 am

I love the work that President Obama has been doing thus far. Has he done more for the good of people than most other Presidents? Well, I can say he has of the last three electors. Do I agree on everything he has done and said in his Presidency? .No I don’t. And yes Devin Robinson, we all are entitle to have our opinion and should be respected for such. No one is not asking you to like our opinion but respect that we have one.
First, I also agree with some that I don’t believe that the President Obama should not had given his opinion publicly on gay marriages. He open a can of worms. The individuals that take this subject to heart, the so-called Christians will not take his opinion, at just that, HIS OPINION. Those people will take it personal and may cause him some votes.
I can’t understand why people feel as if everyone has to agree with every lifestyle. I don’t agree with the gay lifestyle. Its not natural. If it was, then the same sex could procreate together. You can’t call someone judgmental for saying they don’t like something. That is not being judgmental. I can say, I don’t like murder. Am I being judgmental. The job of the pastor/church is to relay God’s message, not to judge people on it. My question is,
Why does one want to be a Christian and doesn’t want to live by biblical rules? If you don’t want to live according to the Word of God, then don’t claim to be Christian , but you can’t have it both ways. Having rights to live the way you want live is ok, but when you infringe your lifestyle on others who belief are different then it becomes a problem. This is what will happen now that the government wants to make a call in stating their opinion on gay marriages. If teaching our children right from wrong according to the bible, public display of gay rights, that is supported by the government (where most considered their word LAW) will make it difficult to say to our kids, it”s wrong. If someone commit a murder it is a sin, “Thou shall not kill”, the government also backs this sin by making it a law. If the government continue to become a part in what should be dealt with by the churches, then its taking away the spiritual covenant between man and God. That is not right.

    • May 12, 2012 9:35 am

Next will be children’s rights and criminals’ rights. Pedophiles will say children have the right to consent to sex with them and get married too even if the child is only 11 years old. We as a community must have boundaries that protect society from getting out of hand. We should accept the gay lifestyle as humans with free choice but I don’t have to agree with modifying the Bible to fit it. They say they are born that way but so are people with disabilities, yet we restrict them from doing certain things like driving, flying planes or fighting in the military if they will endanger others. Let’s get this straight. The President never had to repeal a law saying Blacks can now serve openly in the military! There’s no other way for Blacks to serve. I am saying this to say that gays were able to serve in the military long before Blacks, and were able to participate in many more activities before Blacks because of their ability to conceal their orientation. I think we should all live free, which also means everyone having a right to their opinions.

      • May 12, 2012 3:06 pm

Exactly!! When will giving “rights” stop with boundaries? When our society gets out of hand, it will take more to repair the damage than the hurt trying to spare feelings in preventing such catastrophe. Love the article!

How is it 1 book based on “stories” collected over a millennia can be considered “truth”? Truth based on what or who’s intent??? Are you free to make your own choices or is it something you do because a book says so? I was under the impression that the reason we have brain, is to use it. That encourages war, discrimination, the stoning of women, etc.?

Yes…Thank you. People place to much too much “faith” (for lack of a better word) in a book that, as you said, is a collection of stories that have no basis in truth. Now, I am not an atheist or agnostic. I believe that things as great and wonderful as the way our body operates, the universe and this planet that we call home was designed and created by something. None of us know what, no matter if you are the pastor of a 10 million member church or a roadside preacher…. but I think we find that out when we die…which is something each and every one of us will do. No matter what we believe as TRUTH. Religion was created to keep people in control and the world is full of ignorant people who have nothing better to do than impose their views and beliefs on others.

Bob Marley followed the Bible, along with many Reggae greats. Most successful people follow some kind of belief system. Non-believers, hope that we are wrong in the afterlifr. This may be the biggesy trick of thr devil and a travesty.

      • May 14, 2012 10:37 am

        Trent,

Let’s just say for one second you are right. Then why are people trying to be united in a union that is totally biblical when they don’t believe in the Bible? Then why isn’t common law marriage or civil unions enough? If the Bible is so fake, then it is simple, don’t try to infiltrate this covenant? We keep arguing the wrong things and proponents for gay marriages shift the premise of peole like me as trying to infringe on their rights. By me granting you these rights, you are taking away my right to practice my religious rights the way it was laid out for me. There’s a way we all can savor our rights and I think we should find that way. I am all the way for equality but my belief is in God and Jesus. If my belief causes me to become unpopular, then so be it. Weak Christians feared and seek acceptance of Pontius Pilate (the king who sanctioned jesus’ prosecution). I don’t. We have modern day “kings” all throughout our political system who we sadly fear or seek acceptance from. We would chaneg our beliefs in a heartbeat if it saved us a job or lowered or taxes. I have to stand in my convictions though I continue to be as open to others, once it doesn’t cause me to deny my faith. I never said I don’t believe in same-sex couples or unions, just not through going against the Bible. Do I make sense?

        PD

      • May 14, 2012 7:26 pm

Yes Professor, what you say does make sense. I never intended for this to become a theological debate. That is a debate that would never end.

For the record, I, personaly do not understand the homosexual lifestyle. I do not understand why two people of the same gender would choose to be together in that way. However, I do have homosexual relatives whom I love very much for the people that they are and not the lifestlye that they lead and would go to war for them for any reason. I also have family members who have passed as a result of contracting AIDS, which they admit was an infection they received by practicing homosexual sex. But who are we as mere human beings to judge, label, ostrasize or ridicule another human being for the lifestyle they lead or the person that they love…if that lifestlye does not directly affect yours? And let’s say everything in the Bible is true and correct…and homosexuals are commiting a grave sin and are an abomination to GOD…HE will deal with these people when the time comes. And again, if everything in the Bible is true…we are ALL unworthy of standing before GOD as we have ALL done things that go against the WORD. Not ONE of us can say we have not. I just don’t believe that we should be the ones to decide or judge, according to what is written in a book that, honestly, no matter if you have the strongest or weakest faith in…none of us really know…and we won’t..until we die. There is enough strife in the world. While we are all here…”Can’t we all just get along?” That’s all.

    Namaste

I am not a naysayer, atheist, or whatever term I will be labeled as because I disagree with the post. I have also held my stance on this issue before the President stated his a few days ago. In addition Many of Devin’s prior post and books for that matter I have truely enjoyed. With my disclaimer in place let me get to my point.

    1. Many other culture and religious sects practice the institution of marriage. Be them Muslim, Hindu, Jew, Morman, and I can go on. Even isolated tribes in the amazon without prior contact have similar customs of a marriage union. Should they use a different term because they have different views?

    2. The institution of marriage seems to have predate written history. It has evolve with its traditions, and religious customs. However, to be seen as a legal union you are subjected to civil law (marriage liecinse). In fact you may go before the Justice of the Peace and be legaly binded. No separation of church and state there.

    3. Continuing from my prior statements, we view maariage as a union under God formed in love. Eloping and going to the local court house or jugde is one viewable statement of love. Howerver, history shows us before this very modern thinking of marriage for love, it was an arrangement. Two powerful or influential factions would be joined. Prince and princes, or two families. Maybe to maintain peace between their countries or to get more influence and power. Also, in some societies to this day a husband would purchase his bride by compensating her family. We still show influence of this practice in our tradition when a father gives away his daughter during our ceremony. In another aspect, when one nation conquered another women of the conquered were taken as brides. I would think they would not go willingly.

    4. my opinion is do to the fact only a man and a woman can procreate that would be a more compelling argument. However, penguins , dolphins, and their is a particular ape that have same sex partners. The point being there is no greater proof of God than nature or life in its full abundance.

All in all, my position is let them have their union and thir rights. We can debate calling it something other than marriage, but even if it becomes legal and they can get their marriage liecinse; we will call it as we do now something other than marriage. With different adjectives before the word marriage or union such as gay, same sex, same partner, homosexual etc.

Devin, and anyoneelse who reads this let’s agree when we do and disagree when we don’t but move forward to make our world a better place for us, our families and anyoneelse who old do likewise.

Everyone throughout history who has promoted the BIBLE as the ultimate word of The Creator has had something to gain, whether it be money or political dominance. Do your research.

And really? Jesus asked his Father to forgive mean, hateful people that were going to murder him and everyone who followed his ideologies and not forgive someone who just wants to love who they want and be loved in return? Really? The B.I.B.L.E.(Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth) is a good moral compass for how we should treat each other. (Proverbs being my favorite chapter) but should not be used as an instrument to oppress, judge, or ridicule ANY human being.

Because marriage has transcended religion in our country, right or wrong, it has become an entity of the State. Due to this, marriage is no longer bound by religious doctrine. We can see this when the government bestows marriages upon people who are self proclaimed atheists. To say that marriage and it’s definition is based solely on what the bible says is flawed because the definition has now evolved to incorporate marriage in non-religious settings. Therefore, it would be wrong to suggest that homosexuals do not have the right to marry suggesting instead that they have separate but equal unions defined by the government. Marriage no longer belongs solely to the churches. It is completely acceptable for churches, synagogues, and mosques to refuse to marry homosexuals but the government should be required to perform and recognize same sex marriages.

Well put. I never considered the point that, if homosexual marriage should not be recognized because the bible forbids it, then atheists and agnostics for sure should not have recognized unions either…because the bible says so. And isn’t marriage supposed to be a GOD ordained institution? How can people who don’t even believe in GOD be blessed in this wonderful union? Surly they will be going to hell. My position was just that, the bible should not be used as a reference point and instrument of judgement as to how people love each other( never mind all of the blatant inconsistencies). There are 2 vocalizations that sound the same in ANY language…laughter and crying. We are ALL the same. We need to start paying attention to that fact. Again, well thought out and profound point of view.

      What about that Professor?

The fact that President Obama agrees with same sex marriage even though hes a God fearing man I believe is commedable. He didnt let government or religion dictate how he
felt about the subject. The day I give the church or government the power pver what I
should think is right in my heart. Well let me just say that will be the day.
